Boat safety training a top priority for NWT tourism operators

News Releases

YELLOWKNIFE (October 23, 2013) – To improve the safety of all boaters and make the boating experience enjoyable for tourists, a train-the-trainer course for Pleasure Craft Operating Certification (PCOC) will be held in Yellowknife from October 28-30 in preparation for the next tourism season.

Participants who successfully complete the course will become Transport Canada certified trainers with the ability to provide PCOC certification training to tourism operators in the NWT.

“Having a pool of qualified trainers that we can call upon to deliver boat-safety training to tourism operators across the territory will help to ensure an overall safer boating experience for everyone,” said Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) David Ramsay. “People who spend time on the water during their stay here can come to expect a high quality of safety and service when they visit the NWT.”

The three-day course will be hosted by the Department of ITI and includes both the general PCOC training and a train-the-trainer course. Participants who already have their PCOC card can also attend to refresh their training, with content targeted exclusively for northern boating realities.

By providing training to local tourism operators, the Government of the Northwest Territories remains committed to strengthening and diversifying the economy, a key priority of the 17th Legislative Assembly.
