Community Governments Provided Funds to Recognize Volunteers

News Releases

YELLOWKNIFE (September 9, 2013) – The GNWT will provide financial support to community governments to help with the costs of hosting events to recognize the important role volunteers play in contributing to sustainable, safe, and vibrant communities.

“Across our territory, volunteers add so much value to our communities,” said Robert C. McLeod, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs. “They contribute countless hours of service and help improve the quality of life for all residents. They should be recognized and encouraged to continue their efforts. In the past when we have recognized volunteers, they have been the first to say that there are others who are also deserving of recognition.  This new program will allow communities to come together and celebrate and recognize the important work undertaken by our many volunteers.”

The Volunteer Recognition Policy allows community governments to promote and encourage volunteerism through planned community recognition events.  They can apply for contributions of up to $1000 per year for eligible costs related to hosting these events.  To find out more about the program or to access an application form, visit the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs’ website.

Recognizing and supporting volunteers who build sustainable, vibrant, safe communities is an important part of Believing in People and Building on the Strengths of Northerners, as envisioned in the goals of the 17th Assembly of the Government of the Northwest Territories.
