Ministers' Statements and Speeches

(December 6, 2013) - Good evening everyone, and thank you for joining us here at Canada Place this evening.

To many Canadians, the Northwest Territories is the great white north, land of polar bears, snow, ice, and minus 40 temperatures.  But there is so much more to our territory than that.

I have lived in the Northwest Territories for almost two decades, but I never get tired of viewing the Aurora Borealis in the winter skies. I want to share a story with you about one of these times.

I have three children – and as I’m sure many of you here tonight can appreciate, life can get pretty hectic with all the back and forth, balancing schedules, and making sure everyone is where they need to be at the right time. One night a little while ago we were heading off somewhere – we were buckling the kids in the car, trying to get where we needed to be on time.

As I went to climb in the driver’s seat, I noticed the familiar green glow of the northern lights high up in the sky. In a matter of moments, these ribbons started turning pink and yellow and started swirling above my head, filling the night sky with their spectacular display. I couldn’t take my eyes off of them, and at the same time couldn’t believe that something this beautiful was happening right above me. It was like nature’s own fireworks display – but with silent bangs of brilliance.

And now, I want to invite all of you here tonight to come experience the wonder of the lights for yourself, in the Aurora Capital of the World. It really is the world’s greatest light show and you can have a front row seat in the Northwest Territories. We have room for everyone – with 1.2 million square kilometres, we have plenty of room for you to visit and enjoy the sights.

We are now in peak aurora viewing season – and with the clear skies we are known for, seeing the aurora in the late hours of the evening is almost guaranteed.

I hope that what you see and experience here tonight will place the Northwest Territories at the top of your “must see” list, and we would love to host you as you have the experience of a lifetime.

Come immerse yourself in our exemplary Northern hospitality and I promise we’ll make sure it’s a vacation with unforgettable memories.

I think you’ll find that the title “Aurora Capital of the World” is accurate in every sense.

Thank you, and enjoy the rest of your evening.
