New website helps NWT residents to Drive Alive

News Releases

YELLOWKNIFE (September 23, 2013) – Residents of the Northwest Territories (NWT) now have access to a single website to get information about safe travel on the roads, streets and trails of the NWT.

Minister of Transportation David Ramsay says the new website will make it easier for residents to access the resources they need to reduce collisions in their communities. “Our aim is to reduce the number of preventable collisions through awareness and education,” he said. “This website provides the resources and information needed for people to reduce their risk of serious injury and death on our roads, streets and trails.”

The site http://drivealive.ca provides information on safe driving in the North, as well as the various campaigns that are run under the Drive Alive banner. These include:

  • Buckle Up NWT, which aims to bring seat belt use in the NWT to above the Canadian average;
  • NWT Survivors Club, which celebrates those who have been spared serious injury or death because they wore their seat belt, helmet or lifejacket;
  • Leave the Phone Alone, which supports Drive Alive campaigns to encourage drivers to avoid distractions while driving;
  • Drive Alert, Drive Sober, which encourages drivers and those who influence them to drive only when their judgment is not impaired by alcohol, drugs, fatigue or distractions;
  • Be Zone Aware, which raises awareness of increased penalties and reduced speeds in construction, maintenance, school and enforcement zones;
  • Bison Awareness, which makes drivers aware of the steps they need to take to avoid collisions with bison on highways 3, 5 and 7; and
  • Life of the Party, which celebrates designated drivers and the role they play in reducing the number of collisions, injuries and fatalities associated with impaired driving;

  •

There are also resources for young drivers, parents and teachers to encourage safe driving on the roads and safe riding on snowmobiles and ATVs.

Drive Alive supports the 17th Assembly’s goal of healthy people by investing in injury prevention, education and awareness.
