YELLOWKNIFE (September 21, 2015) – The NWT Fire Marshal is reminding residents that with the beginning of another winter that all residents should be checking their carbon monoxide safety preparedness.
Carbon monoxide is a gas that is created by the incomplete burning of fuels. These fuels include gasoline, wood, natural gas, propane and oil. All are common and used daily in homes across the NWT.
Carbon monoxide is odourless, tasteless, and invisible. Carbon monoxide is poisonous and can accumulate in living spaces due to improperly installed or operating heating devices.
“Carbon monoxide is a real threat, but there are a few simple things people can do to ensure they are safe,” said Chucker Dewar, the NWT Fire Marshal. “Get a carbon monoxide detector, test the detectors you already have to ensure they are working, and have your heating devices maintained and inspected by a professional.”
Carbon monoxide awareness is a key element to every home’s fire protection plan. If you want more information on how to ensure you and your family are protected you can contact your local Assistant Fire Marshal.
Until October 30th, as part of Fire Prevention Week, the Office of the Fire Marshal will be running a Home Fire Safety contest. Residents and their children are encouraged to fill out an online checklist at www.maca.gov.nt.ca, and all completed checklists will be entered into the contest prize draw. The entry deadline is October 30, 2015.
