YELLOWKNIFE (October 11, 2013) – Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs Robert C. McLeod has recognized members of the NWT Fire Service for their work in protecting our families and homes from the threat of fire by awarding the annual Fire Service Merit Awards. The awards are announced each year during National Fire Prevention Week.

“Fire prevention and response is critical to maintaining the security of our communities,” said Minister McLeod. “The dedication of the both paid and volunteer firefighters is something we should recognize, because it benefits all of us.”

NWT Fire Service Merit Awards are based on nominations from community members and fire chiefs. The awards honour and recognize individuals and community fire departments for their significant contribution to fire safety and fire service across the territory.

The 2013 award recipients are:

  • Scott Whitmore – Fort Simpson Fire Department (Individual Award)
  • Yellowknife Fire Department
  • Hay River Fire Department

  •

Recognizing and supporting the NWT fire service helps to create sustainable, vibrant, and safe communities as outlined in the 17th Assembly’s vision of Believing in People and Building on the Strengths of Northerners.
