Northwest Territories Liquor Enforcement launches NWT SafeServe Certification Program

Public Service Announcement

Yellowknife — March 15, 2022

The Northwest Territories (NWT) Liquor Enforcement division, administered through the Government of the Northwest Territories department of Finance,  has launched an online SafeServe Certification program to provide responsible service training to liquor licence holders.

SafeServe is designed to ensure that liquor is sold and served in a way that keeps customers, employees and community members safe from alcohol-related harms. Some of the SafeServe training topics include:

  • duty of care;
  • legal responsibilities and liabilities when serving or selling liquor;
  • how to tell when a customer or guest is intoxicated;
  • how alcohol affects the body;
  • how to refuse liquor sales or service to minors and people who appear intoxicated; and
  • illegal activities that can happen at licensed premises.

The Northwest Territories Liquor Licensing Board requires licence holders to demonstrate that all liquor serving staff and onsite managers have taken SafeServe training as a requirement for licence renewal.

The training is offered free of charge and is available online to all interested NWT residents.
