On May 8, 2024 at 9:55 a.m. MST, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) will send out a test alert through various platforms. Residents may see and hear the public alert test on wireless devices, cable networks, and radio stations across the Northwest Territories (NWT).
During the test, the critical alert siren will go off with a message to NWT residents through various platforms, including all cellphones, confirming there is no need for concern. It is important that the GNWT tests the alert system when the risk is low to ensure that the system is operating properly and will continue to be an effective way to warn the public about emergencies when they occur.
NWT Alert is the NWT’s public alerting system designed to keep residents and visitors informed. For information during an emergency, check with your community government and visit www.NWTalert.ca.
It is important to note that not all residents will receive the test alert on their wireless device. This may occur for a variety of reasons, including device compatibility, connection to an LTE network, cell tower coverage, device software, and settings. The public is encouraged to check their device compatibility on their wireless service provider’s website and ensure that their device has the latest software update installed.

National Emergency Preparedness Week
This alert test is occurring during Emergency Preparedness Week, which runs from May 5-11, 2024. This is a time when residents are reminded to consider risks in their area and to take action towards ensuring personal preparedness.
Having a household emergency plan and an emergency kit in place are important steps that everyone can take. NWT Alert is another tool residents can use to ensure personal preparedness.
Be Prepared. Know your risks.
