NWT and Government of Canada Work Together to Increase Emergency Preparedness Capacity

News Releases

August 19, 2011 - The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is working in partnership with the Government of Canada to enhance emergency preparedness and response activities in the NWT.

Seven projects totalling approximately $450,000 received funding in 2010-11. This included a contribution of $194,000 from the Government of Canada through the Joint Emergency Preparedness Program (JEPP) to support Canada’s emergency management priorities – developing valuable learning events and the improvement of telecommunications capacity.

The Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) administers JEPP on behalf of Public Safety Canada. Funding is available annually to GNWT departments and municipal authorities to help meet the costs of approved emergency preparedness projects.

“Being prepared for emergencies is important. JEPP support efforts across our territory to increase emergency preparedness capacity through training, education, and improved telecommunications,” said Robert C. McLeod, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs. “The Government of Canada is a valuable partner in protecting the safety of people and property in communities across the Northwest Territories.”

“Through JEPP, the Government of Canada has been helping provinces and territories prepare for emergencies for over 30 years,” said Canada’s Public Safety Minister Vic Toews. “All governments share a responsibility to invest in emergency preparedness and help keep Canadians safe.”

Projects supported by JEPP improve emergency preparedness capacity and support the GNWT’s goal of sustainable, vibrant, safe communities as envisioned in the 16th Assemblies’ Vision of Northerners Working Together.

Communities wishing to pursue JEPP projects in 2012-2013 can find more information about the program on MACA’s website at www.maca.gov.nt.ca, or contact the MACA office in your region.
