NWT Announces Emergency Preparedness Week Contest Winners

News Releases

YELLOWKNIFE (May 27, 2014) – During the 2014 National Emergency Preparedness Week the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs asked residents to educate themselves on personal emergency preparedness with a chance to enter their names into a draw for one of two family emergency kits.

After many successful responses from across the Northwest Territories all entries were entered in a draw and two winners were selected. The winners of the 2014 Emergency Preparedness Challenge are:

  • Jonah Gordon of Fort Smith, and
  • Diane McPhee of Inuvik.

“Understanding the importance of preparedness and personal responsibility are key components of being ready for an emergency,” said Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs Robert C. McLeod. “Emergency Preparedness Week is a great time to highlight the importance of preparedness, but being ready for emergencies is a year-round responsibility.”

More information on emergency preparedness can be found by visiting the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs website where residents can find a number of resources that will help them in their preparations.

Ensuring northerners are educated and equipped for emergency situations is an important part of the GNWT’s efforts to create sustainable, vibrant and safe communities as outlined in the 17th Assembly’s vision of Believing in People and Building on the Strengths of Northerners.
