NWT Joins Canadians in Honouring Afghanistan Mission

News Releases

INUVIK (May 9, 2014) – Premier Bob McLeod and NWT Association of Communities (NWTAC) President Tina Gargan will join with community leaders from across the Northwest Territories at the 48th Annual General Meeting of the NWTAC in Inuvik today to recognize the contributions and sacrifices of Canadians during the 12-year military mission in Afghanistan.

“Commitment to duty and service to others are important values for Northerners,” says Premier Bob McLeod. “We are proud to join with Canadians from coast to coast to coast in remembering and recognizing the men and women who put themselves in harm’s way on behalf of others to help promote peace, democracy and security in Afghanistan and around the world.”

“As elected leaders and Canadians, we are humbled and honoured by the sacrifices our Armed Forces members have made to protect our freedoms,” says NWTAC President Tina Gargan.  “We will stand in silence today to demonstrate our gratitude and respect.”

Governor General David Johnston has issued a royal proclamation declaring May 9, 2014 as a National Day of Honour to recognize and commemorate Canada’s military mission in Afghanistan. The day will be marked by a parade and national ceremony on Parliament Hill and events across the country, as well as a two-minute Moment of Silence to be observed nationally at 1:30 pm EDT.

In addition to the event in Inuvik, the National Day of Honour will also be marked by a ceremony in Yellowknife organized by Joint Task Force (North). NWT residents are also encouraged to show their appreciation by posting a message to Canadian troops at http://www.forces.gc.ca/en/write-to-the-troops/index.page.
