Funding supports economic opportunities for Yellowknife Airport


August 8, 2011 — A ribbon cutting ceremony marked the official opening of Yellowknife Airport’s new Combined Services Building. The new multi-use facility houses the airport fire hall, equipment maintenance bays, as well as administrative space for trades and fire hall staff.

“The new Combined Services Building will bolster the Yellowknife Airport’s commercial and industrial opportunities,” said Ted Menzies, Minister of State (Finance), on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. “Our Government is proud to be making strategic infrastructure investments across the North that support a growing economy, a clean environment and strong and prosperous communities.”


“Strategic investments in infrastructure are a key priority for our Government, and this investment will help to ensure safe, reliable, and effective airport operations,” said GNWT Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment Bob McLeod, on behalf of Transportation Minister Michael McLeod. “The replacement of a 50-year-old structure with this modern facility will increase our capacity for dealing with airport emergencies and help our airport staff to do their jobs more efficiently.”

The Governments of Canada and theNorthwest Territoriesinvested $20.7 million toward the new facility. Federal funding for the initiative comes from the Provincial-Territorial Base Fund which is part of the Building Canada plan. It is designed to help theNorthwest Territoriesinvest in core infrastructure priorities such as water, wastewater, green energy, regional and community airports, as well as safe roads.

The Government of the Northwest Territoriesis working closely with the Government of Canada to ensure that infrastructure funds are spent on priorities throughout the territory. TheNorthwest Territories’ total federal allocation for initiatives under the Provincial-Territorial Base Fund agreement is $185.8 million, which has been fully committed toward 63 priority infrastructure initiatives worth more than $310 million.

Canada and the Northwest Territoriesare working together to create jobs and boost the economy, while making significant investments that will help communities improve their infrastructure. Both levels of government are working together with the NWT Association of Communities to ensure that these infrastructure funds are delivered quickly and efficiently for priority initiatives throughout the territory. Across all of its funds, InfrastructureCanadahas now committed $10.6 billion toward approximately 6,400 infrastructure projects as part ofCanada’s Economic Action Plan.
