The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) are encouraging residents to practice safe charging habits during Fire Prevention Week™, October 4 to 10, 2026.
This year's Fire Prevention Week™ theme, "Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower," highlights the importance of safely charging the devices we use every day. Many household items, including phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, toys, e-bikes and scooters, rely on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.
Lithium-ion batteries store a significant amount of energy in a small space. While generally safe, they can overheat, catch fire, or explode if damaged, improperly charged, or used with incompatible charging equipment.
Fire Prevention Week™ serves as a reminder that simple charging habits can help prevent fires and keep households safe.
Safe Charging Reminders
- Use manufacturer-approved chargers and cords.
- Charge devices on hard, flat surfaces and keep them away from beds, couches, and other soft materials.
- Unplug devices when they are fully charged.
- Stop using any device or battery that is overheating, swelling, smoking, or producing an unusual odour.
- Charge larger battery-powered devices, such as e-bikes and scooters, in safe locations away from exits and combustible materials.
By following safe charging practices, residents can help reduce the risk of fire and ensure that rechargeable devices remain a convenient and safe part of everyday life.
The OFM encourages residents, families, educators, and fire departments to access Fire Prevention Week™ resources and educational materials available online.
