Premier Bob McLeod speech from Spectacular NWT Gala in Ottawa

Ministers' Statements and Speeches

(February 1, 2013) - We're here in Ottawa to put the focus on the NWT. We've been having very focused meetings with federal ministers and stakeholders about the future of our territory. We're looking for partnerships to get us to the next step, to help us to develop a sustainable economy that supports healthy, vibrant communities all over Canada's North and maintains Arctic sovereignty. We know what we want and we are focused on making those things a reality.

We want a North where Northerners make decisions about how to develop and protect our land using a regulatory system that's effective and efficient. We want to expand our communities' access to clean hydroelectric power and the digital economy. And we want to be sure of our partnership arrangements for sustainable housing, responsible stewardship, and extending Canada's highways from sea to sea to sea.

A strong North will benefit our people, contribute to the national economy and create opportunities for all Canadians. Look north. This is an exciting time for us. I'm glad you're here tonight; this is the next step in an ongoing relationship that will benefit all of us. And you can be sure this isn't the last time you'll be seeing me. I'm making a habit of coming to Ottawa often to talk about what the NWT has to offer. But I hope you'll come and see it for yourself.

When you come to visit, be sure to get a window seat. The NWT is spectacular from the air. The one thing I would warn you is not to get into a plane if Adam is flying it.

I’ve seen his show. I’m concerned about his safety record. But that’s what makes his show so great. I’ve had a few emergency landings, and just last week had the wheel come off the plane while we were taxiing to the terminal after landing in Toronto. But the things that happen on his planes have never happened to me, and I do a lot of flying around the North.

I’m glad you’re here. I hope you’ll take the next step and come visit our Spectacular NWT. It’ll be the experience of a lifetime.
