YELLOWKNIFE (June 5, 2014) – Premier Bob McLeod congratulated Nellie Cournoyea, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, and all Inuvialuit on the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Inuvialuit Final Agreement today.
“I want to extend my congratulations to the Inuvialuit as they celebrate this significant milestone,” said Premier McLeod. “The Inuvialuit Final Agreement was the first step to self-sufficiency for the Inuvialuit and enabled them to be equal and meaningful participants in decisions affecting land, water and wildlife management in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region. In the 30 years since the signing, the Inuvialuit have been leaders in promoting the growth and evolution of the territory, including their early and strong support for devolution.”
As the first comprehensive land claim agreement settled in the Northwest Territories, the Inuvialuit Final Agreement led the way for other land claims. Under the agreement, the Inuvialuit have also been able to take advantage of new opportunities in natural resources, economic development and land development.
“Thirty years ago a partnership was created to promote the aspirations and best interests of the Inuvialuit. That work continues today in the form of ongoing self-government negotiations and devolution,” said Premier McLeod. “I look forward to our ongoing work with the Inuvialuit through the Intergovernmental Council and other forums to fulfill the vision that began 30 years ago.”
