Premier to Promote Circumpolar Cooperation in Finland

November 5, 2010 - Premier Floyd Roland will travel to Helsinki this weekend where he will deliver a key note address at the “Arctic Future – Cooperation in the Face of Change” seminar on November 8, 2010.

Given its importance to NWT residents, Premier Roland has become a leading proponent for building international understanding and cooperation on key issues impacting the Circumpolar North and promoting the importance of Northern decision making and cooperation in the face of growing global interest in the Arctic.

Premier Roland is in Finland on the invitation of Canada’s Ambassador.

While in Finland, the Premier will also meet with Finnish government officials on education, climate change and energy issues, and regional development including broadband access. On November 10-11, the Premier will visit Rovaniemi where he will meet with the University of Lapland and the University of the Arctic, Sami Parliament representatives, and the Lapland Chamber of Commerce.

In support of the recent construction and deployment of Inuvik’s Satellite Station Facility, the Premier will also use the opportunities presented by this travel to visit partner satellite facilities in Sweden and Germany.

Nunakput MLA, Jackie Jacobson will be accompanying the Premier.
