Premier R.J. Simpson issued the following statement today in response to Canada’s announcement of new investment in the North:
“Prime Minister Carney’s announcement today marks an important step forward for the Northwest Territories and for Canada’s Arctic.
“The Government of the Northwest Territories welcomes the federal government’s commitment to investing in critical infrastructure that will strengthen our communities, support economic development, and reinforce Canada’s presence in the North.
“The Arctic is central to Canada’s future. Strengthening infrastructure, transportation, and energy systems in the North helps ensure that Canada can fully exercise its sovereignty while unlocking opportunities for people who live here.
“Projects such as the Mackenzie Valley Highway, the Arctic Economic and Security Corridor, and the expansion of the Taltson hydroelectric system have the potential to transform our territory. They will help connect communities, create new economic opportunities, and support responsible development of the NWT’s natural resources, including the critical minerals and energy resources the world increasingly depends on.
“These efforts will only succeed through strong partnership. Indigenous governments and organizations have been leaders and advocates for responsible development in the North, and their close collaboration will continue to be essential as these projects move forward.
“Today’s announcement reflects years of advocacy and planning by Northerners who have long understood the potential of our region.
“When completed, these major infrastructure projects will reshape transportation, energy, and economic opportunity in the North and help define Canada’s Arctic for generations.
“Now that the work is about to begin. I encourage residents, businesses, and communities across the Northwest Territories to roll up their sleeves and take part in building the next chapter of our territory’s future.
“A stronger North means a stronger Canada, and we look forward to working with our federal and Indigenous partners to turn this vision into reality.”
