Premier R.J. Simpson issued the following statement today ahead of meetings of Canada’s Premiers and First Ministers in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island:

“No matter where they live, Canadians are facing many of the same challenges. The high cost of living, access to health care, housing, public safety, economic uncertainty, and the growing impact of emergencies and natural disasters are issues that require governments to work together.

“This week’s meetings are an important opportunity to find common ground with provincial and territorial colleagues and to continue working with the federal government on practical solutions that improve the lives of Canadians.

“For the Northwest Territories, that means continuing to advance Arctic sovereignty and security in a way that also strengthens our communities and creates lasting opportunities for Northerners.

“We have made tangible progress over the past year. Major projects such as the Mackenzie Valley Highway, the Arctic Economic and Security Corridor, and the Taltson Hydro Expansion are gaining national attention. There is growing recognition that investing in the North is essential to Canada’s economic and security interests.

“As Canada makes historic investments in the North, we need to make sure those investments improve the lives of the people who live here and leave communities stronger. The success of our major projects depends on accessible and affordable housing, healthy communities, a strong workforce and meaningful economic opportunities for Indigenous governments, Northern businesses and residents.

“I will also continue to advocate for sustainable, predictable federal support for health care and other essential programs and services. Provinces and territories need long-term partnerships with Canada that allow us to plan ahead and respond to the realities our residents face.

“Indigenous governments and organizations are essential partners in building the future of the Northwest Territories and the country. In the NWT, partnership is built into the way we govern. I look forward to meeting with National Indigenous Organization leaders to help ensure Indigenous priorities and perspectives are part of these national conversations.

“Later this summer, the Northwest Territories will take on the role of Chair of the Council of the Federation for the coming year. I look forward to working with Premiers from across the country to build on the areas where we agree, strengthen our relationship with the federal government and focus on delivering real results for Canadians.

“A stronger Northwest Territories and a stronger North mean a stronger Canada. I look forward to carrying that message into this week’s discussions and to working with my colleagues to keep moving our shared priorities forward.”
