Premier Simpson responds to launch of federal Defence Industrial Strategy

Media Statement

Yellowknife — February 17, 2026

Premier R.J. Simpson issued the following statement today, following the Government of Canada’s announcement of the launch of a new Defence Industrial Strategy:

“On behalf of the Government of the Northwest Territories, I welcome Prime Minister Carney’s launch of Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy. The Strategy’s strong focus on research, innovation, and dual-use technologies is particularly relevant to the North.

“Here in the Northwest Territories, we offer a unique environment in which to research, develop, and provide training on the equipment and technologies intended for use in Arctic conditions. If systems are designed to operate in the North, they should be tested and validated here, in partnership with northern governments, Indigenous rights holders, and communities.

“The Northwest Territories also has a critical role to play in strengthening Canada’s defence supply chains. We are home to 25 of Canada’s 34 identified critical minerals — resources that are essential to advanced manufacturing, emerging technologies, and allied defence industries. As Canada works to accelerate critical mineral development, Arctic resources must be recognized as strategic national assets.

“At the same time, major infrastructure investments in projects such as the Mackenzie Valley Highway and a potential Arctic Economic and Security Corridor remain complementary and essential to Canada’s defence objectives. Permanent, climate-resilient transportation corridors reduce reliance on seasonal infrastructure, improve emergency preparedness, and enhance mobility for the Canadian Armed Forces, the Canadian Rangers, and our NORAD and NATO partners.

“As the Defence Industrial Strategy is implemented, we look forward to working closely with the federal government to ensure it delivers lasting benefits for Northerners, including meaningful Northern and Indigenous employment, training, and procurement. Investments in Northern infrastructure, housing, energy, and workforce capacity are foundational to Canada’s defence readiness and sovereignty in the Arctic.”
