Producers' Incentive Program relaunches, aims to boost Northern film industry

News Releases

Yellowknife — October 6, 2026

Enhanced support for northern producers is here by way of the relaunched Northwest Territories Producers Incentive Program. This program is for producers developing film, television and digital media projects in the Northwest Territories.

Administered through the Northwest Territories Film Commission, the renewed program reflects feedback from industry participants and recommendations from a comprehensive evaluation of the former Producers' Incentive Pilot Program. The updated program is designed to better support local producers, address rising production costs, and strengthen the competitiveness of the Northwest Territories film and media sector.

Key improvements include:

  • Increased funding for pre-development projects from up to $10,000 to up to $15,000 per project;
  • Increased funding for development projects from up to $25,000 to up to $35,000 per project;
  • Updated eligibility and program requirements to strengthen accountability and align with industry best practices; and
  • Improved application, reporting and program administration processes to provide greater clarity and consistency for applicants.

The relaunched Producers' Incentive Program is funded at $200,000 annually and supports Northwest Territories producers in advancing projects toward production and attracting investment to the territory's film and media sector.

Originally launched as a pilot in 2021, the program supported northern producers during the early stages of project development by helping them create the materials needed to secure financing and production partners. Over three years, the pilot provided support to 20 projects and helped build capacity within the Northwest Territories film and media sector.

Following a recent evaluation of the pilot program, the Government of the Northwest Territories updated the Producers' Incentive Program to reflect current industry standards and stakeholder feedback.

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis beginning April 1 each year and closing February 1, subject to available funding.
