Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal presentations across the NWT

YELLOWKNIFE (February 21, 2013) – Eleven NWT residents were presented with Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medals at ceremonies in communities across the Northwest Territories recently.

 On the Hay River Reserve on February 8th Daniel Sonfrere was recognized by Dehcho MLA Michael Nadli and Chief Roy Fabian of the K’atlodeeche First Nation. The ceremony was held at Chief Sunrise School.

In Inuvik on February 15th Deputy Commissioner of the Northwest Territories Gerry Kisoun and Robert C. McLeod, MLA Inuvik Twin Lakes, presented Edward Lennie with his Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal. Alfred Moses, MLA Inuvik Boot Lake, Jackie Jacobson, MLA Nunakput, and Nellie Cournoyea, Chair and Chief Executive Officer for the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, also took part in the ceremony.

Three Tlicho residents were honoured with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal at a Tlicho special assembly in Whati, on February 15th. Grand Chief Edward Erasmus, Chief Clifford Daniels of Behchokö, Chief Eddie Chocolate of Gamètì, Chief Charlie Football of Wekweètì, Chief Alfonz Nitsiza of Whatì and Jackson Lafferty, MLA Monfwi, presented medals to:

  • Germain Eyakfwo of Gameti
  • Alex Nitsiza of Whatì
  • Madeline Judas of Wekweètì

On February 18th Michael Nadli, MLA for Deh Cho, presented the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medals to three Fort Providence residents at Deh Gah Elementary and High School:

  • Margaret Thom
  • John Landry
  • Sam Gargan

In Yellowknife on February 19th Constable Duncan R. Osmond of Paulatuk and Kellie Mitchell of Yellowknife were presented their medals at an RCMP medal ceremony. Medals were presented by RCMP Chief Superintendent Wade Blake, G Division Commanding Officer, and Honourable George Tuccaro, Commissioner of the Northwest Territories. Hilary Jones of Yellowknife was presented with her medal on February 18th by federal Minister of Health Leona Aglukkaq at a special ceremony in the Greenstone Building.

The Diamond Jubilee Medal was created by the Government of Canada to recognize the outstanding contributions of Canadians of all ages and from all walks of life. This medal program is one of the elements of the year-long Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Further medal presentation ceremonies are being planned as the Diamond Jubilee year is drawing to a close.
