May 2, 2011 - Minister of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) J. Michael Miltenberger has released a report outlining the general status of more than 3400 wild species in the Northwest Territories.
The NWT Species 2011-2015 ranks all species in the NWT including mammals, fish, birds, amphibians, reptiles, plants and some insects and fulfills GNWT commitments under the Accord for the Protection of Species at Risk in Canada.
The report (the third published under the Accord) serves as a valuable reference for government, wildlife co-management boards and industry to prioritize environmental assessment, monitoring and research activities. It is produced in partnership with wildlife management agencies with responsibilities in the NWT.
Information and data is updated every five years. It is collected through traditional and scientific knowledge and shared with the Canada-wide General Status of Wild Species program in the interest of identifying changes in species distribution, population numbers and potential threats to wildlife populations or habitats.
