As we head into the holiday season, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) reminds residents of the requirements for the purchase and discharge of fireworks within the Northwest Territories (NWT).
Under the NWT Fireworks Regulations, anyone wishing to sell, offer for sale, give, purchase, possess, store, or set off fireworks must first obtain written authorization from the Fire Marshal. Applications for both selling and purchasing/using fireworks can be found on the MACA website at www.maca.gov.nt.ca/en/services/fireworks-permitting.
If you have purchased fireworks outside the NWT or through online distributors, you must still complete the Application to Purchase and Use Fireworks and receive approval before discharging them.
In some communities, the local authority has developed their own approval process for the use of fireworks. If you plan to discharge fireworks within municipal boundaries, contact your municipal office to confirm local requirements and obtain necessary approvals.
GNWT offices will be closed from December 23, 2024, to January 2, 2025. Due to processing times and seasonal demands, any fireworks applications submitted after December 15, 2024, may not be processed until the new year.
