As summer gets underway across the Northwest Territories, the Government of the Northwest Territories is reminding residents that there’s more happening on summer roads than you think.
Warmer weather brings more people onto the roads, including cyclists, pedestrians, roadside workers, tourists, and increased highway traffic throughout the territory.
Summer roads can feel easier to drive, but serious collisions still happen when drivers become distracted, fatigued, impaired, or overconfident. Long stretches of highway, changing road conditions, construction zones, dust, wildlife, and increased activity all require drivers to stay alert and adapt to conditions.
Many serious collisions are linked to preventable behaviours such as distracted driving, impaired driving, speeding, and inattention. Taking your eyes off the road, even for a moment, can have serious consequences.
Drivers are encouraged to stay focused behind the wheel, avoid using electronic devices, slow down when conditions change, and never drive while impaired by alcohol, drugs, or fatigue.
Road safety is a shared responsibility. Every road is shared, and every decision affects someone else.
There’s a lot on the line. Help everyone get home safe this summer.
