Yellowknife (September 12, 2023) - September is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) awareness month, a time dedicated to conversation about FASD, improving prevention, and supporting those living with FASD. The theme for this year’s FASD awareness month is Uniting our Strengths: Finding Solutions Together.
FASD is a complex issue that overlaps many different areas of life. The theme, Uniting our Strengths: Finding Solutions Together, goes beyond framing FASD as an individual issue, as the impacts of FASD matter to the whole community. When we work together, we can find better strategies to help prevent FASD, to diagnose those with this disability, and to support individuals and families.
NWT Rocks Red for FASD
This year, NWT residents can show their support by joining the Red Shoes Rock campaign – an international awareness campaign that brings a voice to those impacted by FASD. Red shoes symbolize the strengths and uniqueness of this community. Residents are encouraged to rock their red shoes during September and share on social media using the hashtag #RedShoesRockNWT. Don’t have red shoes? Wear red socks, slippers, red shoelaces, or paint your toenails red.
