YELLOWKNIFE (October 18, 2010) - This is Small Business Week - a time to celebrate the small and medium-sized businesses and co-operatives, and the contributions they make to our communities and the territorial economy.

"From the home business run by one person to the dynamic enterprises employing dozens of NWT residents, our small businesses provide valuable employment and services throughout our territory," says Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment Bob McLeod. "They also serve to further diversify our economy and provide our communities and regions with opportunities and choices."

It is estimated that small and medium-sized businesses make up 95 percent of Canadian businesses. There are also approximately 9,000 co-operatives in Canada providing products and services to 17 million members.

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) recognizes the importance of assisting NWT entrepreneurs. Through programs like the Support for Entrepreneurs and Economic Development Policy, and organizations such as the Community Futures Development Corporations and the NWT Business Development and Investment Corporation, the GNWT is providing support to our small businesses.

By providing this support through various means, the GNWT is working on maximizing opportunities as envisioned by the 16th Legislative Assembly in theNortherners Working Together plan.
