Statement of Condolence to the family of Dr. R. Gordon Robertson, Companion of the Order of Canada and former Commissioner of the NWT, from Premier Bob McLeod

Ministers' Statements and Speeches

(January 18, 2013) - I was saddened to hear of Dr. Robertson’s passing on Monday, January 14, 2013. It was during his ten years as Commissioner that the current borders of the Northwest Territories were recommended, and our strong, unified territory owes its beginnings to his leadership. He served with the first, second, third and fourth Legislative Councils of the Northwest Territories, the forerunners of our fully elected Legislative Assemblies. He also made great contributions to Canada as a “very civil servant” as he called himself, and was a passionate advocate of a united Canada.

As we work together to build a strong, sustainable future for our territory, we pay respect to our history and those who came before us. We have much to learn from Dr. Robertson’s legacy, especially his dedication to Canadian unity.

The flags at the Legislative Assembly will be flown at half-mast on the day of his memorial service. On behalf of the Government of the Northwest Territories, I offer condolences to his family and friends.
