Staying Safe Behind the Wheel: Canadian Youth Road Safety Week (October 20-26, 2024)

Public Service Announcement

Yellowknife — October 10, 2024

Canadian Youth Road Safety Week is just around the corner, running from October 20 to 26, 2024. This national initiative aims to raise awareness among young and new drivers about the dangers of risky driving behaviors like distracted driving, impaired driving, speeding, and not wearing seatbelts. With road crashes being the third-leading cause of death among youth aged 15 to 24, this campaign is crucial in encouraging safer driving habits.

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) urges young drivers to be aware of the serious consequences of dangerous driving behaviors and how to avoid them. Parents and communities are also encouraged to engage in this important conversation, guiding teens towards responsible driving habits. By spreading the word and setting a positive example, you can play a crucial role in helping teens cultivate safe driving practices that will last a lifetime. Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Distracted Driving: Put your phone away and keep your eyes on the road.
  • Impaired Driving: Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Speeding: Obey speed limits and adjust your speed according to road conditions.
  • Seatbelt Use: Always buckle up, no matter how short the trip.

As we head into Canadian Youth Road Safety Week – and every week throughout the year – remember, your life and the lives of others depend on it. Stay safe and make good choices because there is a lot on the line.
