Ten new homes arrive in Ulukhaktok as Housing NWT advances 98-unit singles housing project

News Releases

Ulukhaktok — September 11, 2026

Housing NWT has reached an important milestone in its plan to deliver 98 new housing units for singles to communities across the Northwest Territories, with the first 10 modular units now on-site in Ulukhaktok.

The units arrived in the community on August 28, after travelling approximately 2,400 kilometres by barge from Hay River, where they were manufactured by Metcan Building Solutions Inc.  With the units now in the community, work needed to prepare the homes for occupancy can begin. This includes constructing the foundations, installing the units, and completing utility and service connections.

Once ready for occupancy later this fall, the five duplexes will provide 10 new single-occupant social housing units in Ulukhaktok.

The broader project will provide 98 units for singles to nine NWT communities by Spring 2028. Communities were selected based on where there is a demonstrated need for singles housing, in line with the NWT Territorial Housing Needs Assessment’s findings that there is a growing need for smaller housing options across the Northwest Territories, particularly for single occupants and Elders.

This work is part of a three-year, $150-million capital investment by the Government of the Northwest Territories in response to the 20th Legislative Assembly housing priority to increase the number of affordable homes.

Quote

“Seeing these homes arrive on-site in Ulukhaktok is an important step toward providing more single housing options in the NWT. Delivering housing in the North takes planning, innovation and strong partnerships, and having these units arrive safely by barge is a perfect example of this work. With the homes now on-site, work focused on getting them ready for tenants can begin.”

- Lucy Kuptana, Minister Responsible for Housing NWT
