Delivery is underway for 10 new modular housing units to Fort Providence as part of a Housing NWT project to deliver 98 new social housing units for singles across the Northwest Territories.
The ten units, built as five duplexes, were manufactured in Hay River by Metcan Building Solutions Inc. The units have been loaded onto trucks and delivery to Fort Providence is underway.
These 10 homes are part of a larger 98-unit project that will provide duplexes and fourplexes designed for singles to nine communities by Spring 2028. Communities were selected based on where there is a demonstrated need for singles housing, in line with the NWT Territorial Housing Needs Assessment’s findings that there is a growing need for smaller housing options across the Northwest Territories, particularly for single occupants and Elders.
In Fort Providence, most of the households on the social housing waitlist are seeking one-bedroom units, making these homes a good match for current community needs.
Ninety-four of these homes are being manufactured in Hay River by Metcan Building Solutions Inc., a partnership between ARCAN Construction Ltd. and the Hay River Métis Government Council.
This work is part of a three-year, $150-million capital investment by the Government of the Northwest Territories in response to the 20th Legislative Assembly’s priority to increase the number of affordable homes across the territory.
