November 25, 2010 - A series of GNWT funded trapping workshops in the Beaufort Delta is one way in which the GNWT is maintaining the NWT’s international reputation for harvesting high quality wild fur.
Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI), Bob McLeod says the workshops are a key element in the GNWT’s ongoing efforts to keep the NWT fur industry strong and vibrant, providing jobs and opportunities to our residents.
“Training is vital to the continued success of our trappers in the international fur industry,” the Minister says. “Our workshops educate trappers on industry best-practices in pelt handling and fur grading which is then reflected in higher returns for NWT trappers.”
ITI will be hosting the workshops in Ulukhaktok, Paulatuk, Tuktoyaktuk and Aklavik from November 28-December 3.
The trapper workshops are one of the activities delivered under ITI’s Genuine Mackenzie Valley Fur Program. Through the program, the GNWT works in partnership with NWT trappers, the fur industry, and the Departments of Environment and Natural Resources and Municipal and Community Affairs to support the territory’s traditional fur economy.
Through initiatives like the workshops, Take-a-Kid Trapping and Trapper Recognition programs the GNWT is taking steps to diversify the economy and provide all communities and regions with opportunities and choices as envisioned in the 16th Legislative Assembly’s Northerners Working Together plan.
