Unearthed: New exhibit by artist Maura Meng coming to the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre

Public Service Announcement

Yellowknife — December 16, 2025

Unearthed is a new Mezzanine Art Gallery exhibition at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre (PWNHC) featuring ceramic sculptures by Yellowknife artist Maura Meng. This exhibit opens on December 19th.

Moving to the Northwest Territories in 2014, Maura initially created functional pottery for local markets but soon felt the work did not reflect her emotional state.

With a desire to expand her practice to include more complex ideas and intuitive exploration, Maura re-focused her work on ceramic sculpture and began digging and experimenting with mud and clay in the lakebeds surrounding her rustic cabin home outside Yellowknife. Gathering locally sourced materials led her to embrace ancient firing techniques and unconventional methods of production. Maura fired the sculptures featured in this exhibit in a custom-built kiln.

Unearthed is an ambitious installation project that includes over 200 hand-made sculptures that reflect Maura’s current state of being.

This is the third exhibit selected through the Art Selection Committee, which evaluates applications for the Mezzanine Art Gallery exhibit.

Unearthed can be viewed beginning December 19th until May 2026.
