Update on Fire Bans in Territorial Parks in the North Slave, Dehcho and South Slave Regions

Yellowknife — June 30, 2026

Due to extremely dry and hot conditions and the increased risk of wildfire, a fire ban is now in effect for multiple Territorial Parks in the North Slave, South Slave, and Dehcho regions. This ban prohibits all open fires. The ban is effective immediately and will remain in place until it is no longer needed.

Fire bans are currently in effect at the following territorial parks:
 

North Slave

  • Fred Henne Territorial Park
  • Yellowknife River Territorial Park
  • Prosperous Lake Territorial Park
  • Pontoon Territorial Park
  • Madeline Lake Territorial Park
  • Prelude Lake Territorial Park
  • Powder Point Territorial Park
  • Cameron River Crossing Territorial Park
  • Hidden Lake Territorial Park
  • Reid Lake Territorial Park
  • North Arm Territorial Park

South Slave

  • Queen Elizabeth Territorial Park
  • Hay River Territorial Park
  • Fort Smith Mission Territorial Park
  • Little Buffalo Falls Territorial Park
  • Little Buffalo Crossing Territorial Park
  • 60th Parallel Territorial Park
  • Twin Falls Territorial Park
  • Alexandra Falls Territorial Park
  • McNallie Creek Territorial Park
  • Lady Evelyn Falls Territorial Park
  • Kakisa River Territorial Park
  • Dory Point Territorial Park
  • Fort Providence Territorial Park
  • Chan Lake Territorial Park

Dehcho

  • Blackstone Territorial Park
  • Sambaa Deh Territorial Park

Camp stoves, enclosed barbeques, and propane-fueled cooking and heating devices are permitted for use in NWT Parks, but must be placed within regulation fire pits and should not emit a flame more than 0.5 metres in diameter and 0.5 metres in height.

Fort Simpson Territorial Park is closed until further notice. Fort Simpson is currently under an evacuation order.
