Yellowknife Airport Land Use Plan sets vision for future growth

News Releases

Yellowknife — October 9, 2026

As part of the ongoing Yellowknife Airport Gateway Strategy, the Yellowknife Airport Land Use Plan has been published on the FlyYZF website, providing a framework to guide future airport development and land use decisions.

The Land Use Plan supports future growth by identifying opportunities for aviation, commercial and infrastructure development while balancing operational, environmental and community considerations.

Developed with support from the YZF Economic Advisory Committee and through engagement with stakeholders, including the Department of National Defence, the plan helps position the airport to meet evolving transportation and economic needs, identifying the west side terminal area as the preferred long-term development option space.

The Land Use Plan is one component of the broader Yellowknife Airport Gateway Strategy, a long-term initiative to strengthen the airport's role as a key driver of economic development across the Northwest Territories.

The Yellowknife Airport Gateway Strategy is advancing into its next phase, which will focus on implementation planning, investment readiness and supporting future growth opportunities at the airport.

Current improvements underway at Yellowknife Airport include construction of runway end safety areas, design planning for terminal washroom upgrades, and continued work with the Department of National Defence on the Runway Taxiway Expansion Project.
