Mr. Speaker, from a statistical perspective, 2016 was a below average fire season. A total of 188 wildland fires were reported in the 2016 fire season, burning 229,000 hectares. As a comparison, there were 241 fires and 622,000 hectares burned in 2015.
Mr. Speaker, the Government of the Northwest Territories has made a commitment in its Mandate to develop a territorial climate change strategy and I wanted to tell Members about the work that is underway.
YELLOWKNIFE (October 13, 2016) – The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) will be engaging northerners this fall and winter on the development of the NWT Climate Change Strategic Framework and an NWT Energy Strategy.
Mr. Speaker, the Northwest Territories joined Canada-wide efforts to recycle end-of-life electronics with the launch of the new Electronics Recycling Program on February 1st. Electronics can contain hazardous chemicals and heavy metals, including lead, cadmium and mercury.
YELLOWKNIFE (September 28, 2015) – Population surveys completed this summer on the Bluenose East, Bluenose West, Bathurst, Cape Bathurst and Tuktoyaktuk Peninsula barren-ground caribou herds in the Northwest Territories indicate the herds continue to decline.
