Distracted Driving Fines Almost Triple

YELLOWKNIFE (June 20, 2014) – The Department of Transportation has almost tripled the fine distracted drivers will be levied from $115 to $322, which includes a 15% Victim of Crime surcharge. The substantial increase supports the 17th Assembly priority of contributing to safe communities in the Northwest Territories by reducing vehicle accidents, injuries, and fatalities.

Statement of Condolence from Premier Bob McLeod on the Loss of Robert Alexie, Jr.

YELLOWKNIFE (June 11, 2014) – I was deeply saddened today to learn of the loss of Robert Alexie Jr., President of the Gwich’in Tribal Council.

President Alexie was a strong leader who helped shape the political landscape of Northwest Territories through his important work on the Gwich’in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement and the NWT Devolution Agreement. His support of devolution was extremely valuable in helping us achieve that important milestone.

YELLOWKNIFE (June 10, 2014) – NWT Mining Week takes place June 9-13 this year and provides an opportunity to recognize the important role the mining sector has played in the NWT over the past 80 years and, with careful planning, will continue to play long into the future. More than 3,000 people are employed in the mining sector in the territory and its four producing mines contribute more than $770 million in annual spending.

Take a Kid Gardening Program Continues to Grow in 2014

HAY RIVER (June 10, 2014) – A whole new crop of students in the South Slave Region is getting an opportunity grow and harvest local produce this summer thanks to the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment’s (ITI) Take a Kid Gardening Program.

In response to the overwhelming success of this hands-on learning opportunity piloted last year, ITI is expanding its introductory agriculture program to include all schools in the South Slave Region. Other regions have also expressed interest in participating and the program is expected to grow.

New NWT Mining Incentive Program to Stimulate Exploration

YELLOWKNIFE (June 9, 2014) – Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment David Ramsay announced the new Mining Incentive Program in the Northwest Territories today.

The Mining Incentive Program (MIP) will provide funds to eligible prospectors and mining exploration companies that are already engaged in mining exploration projects or proposing new projects in the NWT.
