YELLOWKNIFE (June 20, 2014) – The Department of Transportation has almost tripled the fine distracted drivers will be levied from $115 to $322, which includes a 15% Victim of Crime surcharge. The substantial increase supports the 17^th Assembly priority of contributing to safe communities in the Northwest Territories by reducing vehicle accidents, injuries, and fatalities.

YELLOWKNIFE (June 11, 2014) – I was deeply saddened today to learn of the loss of Robert Alexie Jr., President of the Gwich’in Tribal Council.

President Alexie was a strong leader who helped shape the political landscape of Northwest Territories through his important work on the Gwich’in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement and the NWT Devolution Agreement. His support of devolution was extremely valuable in helping us achieve that important milestone.

More than 3,000 people are employed in the mining sector in the territory and its four producing mines contribute more than $770 million in annual spending.

HAY RIVER (June 10, 2014) – A whole new crop of students in the South Slave Region is getting an opportunity grow and harvest local produce this summer thanks to the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment’s (ITI) Take a Kid Gardening Program.

In response to the overwhelming success of this hands-on learning opportunity piloted last year, ITI is expanding its introductory agriculture program to include all schools in the South Slave Region. Other regions have also expressed interest in participating and the program is expected to grow.
