Inuvik-to-Tuktoyaktuk Highway Enters its Second Construction Season

INUVIK (November 5, 2014) – The second construction season of the Inuvik-to-Tuktoyaktuk Highway is now underway. By the end of this winter, significant progress is expected on approximately 95 km of the highly anticipated 137-km all-season highway between Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk. Up to 600 people will be employed over the winter construction season with 70 per cent of workers expected to be northern residents.

Tom Beaulieu – Procurement Shared Services

Mr. Speaker, improving procurement services is helping the Government of the Northwest Territories achieve this Assembly’s goal of more effective and efficient government. By strengthening our procurement practices we are making sure that local businesses can benefit from government contracting opportunities and that our high standards of fiscal responsibility are maintained.

On April 1st, the Procurement Shared Services Centre in the Department of Public Works and Services began operating government-wide in order to better support these goals.

GNWT Supports Career Development of Aviation Students

YELLOWKNIFE (October 7, 2014) – Seven NWT students have been awarded Northern Aviation Scholarships of up to $5,000 to support their full-time studies leading to northern aviation careers.

This scholarship develops a northern workforce by encouraging northerners to pursue careers in aviation and is sponsored by the Governments of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, Discovery Air, Keewatin Air and North-Wright Air.

Inspections Make NWT Roads and Highways Safer During Brake Safety Week

YELLOWKNIFE (September 17, 2014) – Department of Transportation staff continued to ensure the safety of NWT roads and highways by conducting brake inspections in four communities last week.

“Safe driving is everyone’s responsibility, and all drivers need to keep their vehicles in safe operating condition,” said Minister of Transportation Tom Beaulieu. “If your brakes aren’t working, you are a hazard to yourself and to other drivers.”

Construction of Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk Highway Well Underway

INUVIK (May 30, 2014) – With its first construction season over, the Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk Highway construction project is well underway.

It was a short and busy winter as more than 425 workers began constructing the highly anticipated 137-kilometre all-season highway that will link the communities of Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk, which is currently only served by ice road, barge and air. This new highway to the Arctic coast will connect Canada’s road network from coast to coast to coast.
