Prime Minister RJ Simpson issued the following statement today to mark the 20th anniversary of the Tłı̨chǫ Government:

“Twenty years ago, the Tłı̨chǫ Government was officially established – the first in the Northwest Territories to combine a comprehensive land claim and a self-government agreement. This is a historic achievement that reflects decades of vision, unity and determination, and enshrines the right of the Tłı̨chǫ Nation to make decisions for its own people, on its own terms.

“Since then, the Tłı̨chǫ Government has become a leader in governance, land stewardship, and cultural revitalization, setting an example in Canada and around the world. The progress made over the past two decades demonstrates what can be achieved when Indigenous and public governments work in true partnership, each lending its strengths to serve the people of the North.”

“We owe a great deal to the leaders, Elders, and community members whose dedication, courage, and perseverance gave birth to the Tłı̨chǫ Agreement. They laid the foundation upon which today's achievements are built, and their work continues to inspire us.

“Here in the Northwest Territories, we are all shaping a model of governance that is rare in the world, based on mutual respect, shared priorities, and the belief that strong partnerships between governments lead to stronger, healthier communities.

“On behalf of the Government of the Northwest Territories, I congratulate the leaders and people of the Tłı̨chǫ Nation, past and present, and all those working to realize the vision of the Tłı̨chǫ Agreement. We look forward to continuing to work together to build on this strong foundation. This is a significant milestone and a source of great pride for the Tłı̨chǫ Nation and the Northwest Territories.”

“Laà nàtso kò dets'eèhdza eyıt'à weghǫ hàhots'edı ha hǫt'e, Tłı̨chǫ eyıts'ǫ Chı̨k'èda Edza Nę̀ę̀ gha dzę̀ dè hǫt'e. »
