Premier R.J. Simpson marks 20th anniversary of the Tłı̨chǫ Government

Media Statement

Hay River — August 12, 2025

Premier R.J. Simpson issued the following statement today to mark the 20th anniversary of the Tłı̨chǫ Government:

“Twenty years ago, the Tłı̨chǫ Government was formally established — the first in the Northwest Territories to combine a comprehensive land claim and a self-government agreement. It was a landmark achievement that reflected decades of vision, unity, and determination, and enshrined the Tłı̨chǫ Nation’s right to make decisions for their own people, in their own way.

Since that time, the Tłı̨chǫ Government has become a leader in governance, land stewardship, and cultural revitalization, setting an example for others across Canada and around the world. The progress made over the past two decades shows what is possible when Indigenous governments and public governments work in true partnership, each bringing their strengths to serve the people of the North.

We owe much to the leaders, Elders, and community members whose dedication, courage, and persistence made the Tłı̨chǫ Agreement a reality. They laid the foundation on which today’s success stands, and their work continues to inspire where we go from here.

Here in the Northwest Territories, together we are shaping a model of governance that is rare in the world — one built on mutual respect, shared priorities, and the understanding that strong partnerships among governments lead to stronger, healthier communities.

On behalf of the Government of the Northwest Territories, I congratulate the leadership and citizens of the Tłı̨chǫ Nation — past and present — and all those who work to bring the vision of the Tłı̨chǫ Agreement to life. We look forward to continuing to work together to build on this strong foundation. This is a proud milestone for the Tłı̨chǫ and for the Northwest Territories.
