The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) extends its best wishes to the members of Team NWT and the Northwest Territories (NWT) Youth Ambassadors who will represent the territory at the 2025 Canada Games in St. John's, Newfoundland, from August 8 to 25, 2025.
Held every two years, the Canada Games showcase Canadian athletes at the highest level of national competition, alternating between summer and winter editions. This year, the 2025 Canada Summer Games Host Society and the City of St. John's will welcome more than 4,000 athletes from across Canada. Team NWT is represented by 130 athletes from Fort Simpson, Fort Smith, Gameti, Hay River, Inuvik, Łutselk'e, Norman Wells, Tulita, Ulukhaktok, and Yellowknife. Team NWT will compete in eight sports: track and field, basketball, beach volleyball, football, swimming, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling.
Team NWT's participation in the Games is made possible through the dedication of 51 coaches, managers, and mission staff who work tirelessly to provide an unforgettable experience for our athletes. Their efforts are supported by countless volunteers, including those from the Sport North Federation and territorial sport organizations, who play a vital role in team selection and management. Volunteers are the backbone of sport and recreation programs, encouraging NWT residents to lead healthier, more active lives.
The GNWT is proud to support Team NWT through financial assistance and various programs that promote the development of athletes and coaches at the local, regional, territorial and national levels.
In addition to Team NWT, the GNWT also supports the inclusion of the NWT Youth Ambassador Program at the 2025 Canada Summer Games. This program provides youth with a structured and guided volunteer experience at major events, helping them develop life and workplace skills, build self-confidence, and develop leadership skills. Thirteen youth aged 16 to 18 from eight NWT communities will volunteer with the Host Society. These young leaders deserve recognition for seizing this rewarding opportunity and making a meaningful contribution to the Games.
Good luck to all the athletes, coaches, volunteers, and Youth Ambassadors participating in the 2025 Canada Games!
