Job Information

The Wildfire Technician supports regional and territorial wildfire operations in the Northwest Territories, based in Fort Smith and reporting to the Manager of Forestry Operations. Working primarily from April to September, the position assists in the delivery of the wildfire program by coordinating, supervising, and training seasonal and contract fire crews during pre-suppression and suppression activities.

The role includes serving as an Incident Commander on Type 3 wildfire incidents and as a Division Supervisor on larger Type 2 incidents, making critical strategic and tactical decisions related to fire response. The Wildfire Technician conducts fire analysis, fire growth assessments, and contributes to Fire Response Plans and Wildfire Situation Analysis. The position also implements prescribed burns and ignition operations.

Key Requirements

  • Maintains assigned seasonal fire crews and contract personnel in a high state of preparedness during pre-suppression periods for the purpose of initial action on fire events.
  • Coordinates and supervises assigned seasonal fire crews and contract personnel while they are engaged in fire response activities.
  • Initiates and completes operational reports and records.
  • Coordinates and supervises assigned seasonal wildfire crews engaged in pre- suppression and maintenance activities.
  • Assists the Regional Duty Officer

 Key Qualifications

  • A high school diploma and minimum five fire seasons, with progressively increasing responsibility in fire operations and two seasons experience in supervision.
  • Possess an unrestricted class 5 driver's license
