Department Information

The mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victims services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and indigenous values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.

Job Information

Reporting to the Territorial Sentence Administrator, as the Admissions/Discharge & Escort Officer, you will work on a rotating schedule and play a key role in the safe and secure operation of the facility. You will manage the admission and discharge of people in custody, complete internal and external escorts, supervise incarcerated individuals, and ensure the secure handling of personal effects.

As part of the facility operations team, you maintain custody and supervision practices in accordance with NWT Corrections Division standards, supporting safe custody, rehabilitation, and reintegration. You will also help orient, train, and mentor new employees and may act as the Territorial Sentence Administrator when required.

This position functions under legislation including the Criminal Code, Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Youth Criminal Justice Act, Prisons and Reformatories Act, Corrections Act, and all relevant regulations and policies. While on duty, you are designated as a Peace Officer.

Key Responsibilities:
- Complete the admission and discharge process for 40-50 individuals per week.
- Conduct internal and external escorts for persons in custody, contractors, and visitors.
- Supervise up to 48 individuals in custody as required.
- Maintain health, safety, and security throughout the complex.
- Provide secure and accurate storage of personal effects.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, and legislative requirements.
- Support a safe, respectful environment for staff, the public, and persons in custody.

Knowledge & Skills:
- Ability to remain calm and act appropriately in crisis or high-stress situations.
- Understanding of human behaviour, mental health, and challenges faced by persons in custody.
- Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of corrections policies, procedures, and practical correctional techniques.
- Ability to interpret court documents (e.g., warrants, remand orders, fine defaults).
- Commitment to diversity, inclusion, cultural awareness, and trauma-informed practice.
- Knowledge of admissions and discharge processes in a correctional environment.

Key Qualifications:
- Grade 12 Diploma (or CAEC) and successful completion of the NWT Corrections Northern Recruitment Training Program.
- Class 4 Driver's Licence (required at verbal offer).
- First Aid Certification (required at verbal offer).
