The Relief Coroner investigates sudden and unexpected deaths in the Hay River area, attending scenes, completes body removal, conducting external examinations, oversees the collection of toxicological samples, and coordinating with partners such as the RCMP, health authorities, and funeral homes. The role prepares investigative reports and ensures the respectful handling of remains and evidence. Work is performed under the direction of the Deputy Chief Coroner and must follow the Coroners Act and related legislation. This position requires strong judgment, professionalism, confidentiality, and the ability to respond to calls as needed.
Critical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced enviroment
- Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team
- Knowledge and understanding of Coroners Act, NWT Evidence Act, Vital Statistics Act, Public Health Act
- Demonstration and comprehensive knowledge of Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (ATTIPP), relevant GNWT legislation, relevant regulations and policies, and procedures
- Ability to commit to actively upholding and consistently practicing personal diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness, as well as safety and sensitivity approaches in the workplace
These skills are typically attained by;
Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered. The incumbent must be eligible to receive a statutory appointment as a Coroner to perform duties of this position.
Equivalences may include;
- A diploma in criminology, forensics, sociology, investigations, nursing or a related field, and at least 5 years of directly related experience.
- A baccalaureate degree in social sciences criminology, forensics, sociology, investigations, nursing or a related field, and at least 3 years of directly related experience.

This job opening is for a Relief position where there are no established hours of work on a daily, weekly or monthly basis and may be required to report to work on an as and when required basis for facilities where services operate on a daily basis throughout the entire year.

Salary Information
The salary range for this position is from $47.40 per hour to $56.61per hour (approximately $92,430 - $110,390) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $5,662
