The mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victims services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and indigenous values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.

Job Information

The Bilingual Sheriff's Officer provides courtroom security and civil enforcement services for the Courts of the Northwest Territories. The role ensures the safety of judges, court staff, juries, persons in custody, and the public while maintaining the integrity, independence, and proper administration of justice. Duties are carried out independently in court facilities, on circuit, and at alternate locations, often in high-risk or unpredictable environments. The position carries statutory authority and requires professionalism, sound judgment, and the ability to respond effectively to critical incidents.

Key Responsibilities
- Ensures security for participants and facilities.
- Ensures safety and security of courthouse cell area and persons in custody.
- Provides transportation and escorts persons-in-custody.
- Exercises statutory authority in the performance of civil enforcement duties.
- Administration of Jury Management.
- Promotes professional growth and development within the Sheriff's Office.

Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of and the ability to interpret legislation and court documents as they relate to Sheriff's duties.
- Knowledge of enforcement procedures.
- Ability to apply the Use of Force Model, including proper use of pepper spray, ASP baton techniques, pressure point tactics, and control methods.
- Knowledge of court and jury security practices and procedures.
- Ability to respond quickly and effectively to confrontations or emergencies.
- Ability to de-escalate high-risk or volatile situations involving combative or armed individuals.

Key Qualifications
- Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in a related field (law enforcement, criminology, or criminal justice), plus a minimum of two (2) years of experience in a court security or enforcement environment.
- Successful completion of the Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE) (bona fide occupational requirement).
- Valid Class 4 Driver's License.
- Current First Aid, CPR, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification.

Travel

The incumbent in this position will be required to travel by air on scheduled flights and small charter aircraft. Travel on rough and/or winter (ice) roads. Will also be required to travel up to 50 days of the year.
