Department Information

The mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victims services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and indigenous values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.

Job Information

With the Department of Justice, as the Administrator, NWT Courts, you will lead and oversee court operations across the Northwest Territories, supervising a team of approximately 35 staff, including direct reports in Yellowknife and Hay River. You will be responsible for the administration of civil and criminal court services, Sheriff's Services, and satellite registry offices. 

You will be accountable to resident and deputy judges, and serve as a key liaison with the judiciary, legal community, justice partners, and the public. You will be responsible for assessing the impact of and ensuring implementation of new legislation or revisions/amendments to existing legislation for all Courts. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • You will manage all levels of court, including Territorial, Supreme, and Court of Appeal, as well as Bankruptcy and Federal court matters. 
     
  • You will hold multiple statutory roles (e.g., Clerk, Registrar, Justice of the Peace) and perform quasi-judicial functions, while interpreting legislation, Rules of Court, and collective agreements.
     
  • You will manage the day to day financial, human resources and administration of the NWT Courts.
     
  • You will develop policies, procedures and training programs to ensure that the Courts and Sheriff's office run efficiently and in compliance with legislation.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A Degree in Business Administration/Human Resource Management or related degree combined with at least 6 years' experience in court administration or combination of relevant legal and managerial training and experience. Practical experience in Sheriff's services, as well as several levels of court.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the court system, practices and procedures across Canada;
  • Extensive knowledge of the rules and legislation (Federal and Territorial) that govern court actions, such as Rules of the Court, Criminal Code, Civil and Criminal Procedures, etc.

Equivalences

  • Diploma in Business Administration/Human Resource Management or related diploma combined with at least 8 years' experience in court administration or combination of relevant legal and managerial training and experience. Practical experience in Sheriff's services, as well as several levels of court.
  • At least 10 years' experience in court administration or combination of relevant legal and managerial training and experience. Practical experience in Sheriff's services, as well as several levels of court.
  • At least 10 years' experience in court administration, or an equivalent combination of relevant legal/justice and managerial education and experience. Experience working in a courtroom setting, collaborating with various justice system stakeholders, and familiarity with all levels of court will be considered an asset.

The salary range for this position is from $71.44 per hour to $85.33 per hour (approximately $139,308 - $166,394.) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,700.
