Department Information
The Department of Finance has the mandate to provide leadership and direction to the public service in all areas of finance and human resource management. This mandate includes negotiating major financial arrangements with the federal government, providing analysis and advice to the Financial Management Board, and ensuring that financial and information resources are managed effectively, efficiently and economically. This mandate also includes the recruitment and retention of a competent public service that is representative of the people it serves and the development of programs and services that effectively serve the human resource needs of the public service.
Job Information
As a Labour Relations Advisor, you will play a key role in supporting a respectful, effective, and legally compliant workplace across the Government of the Northwest Territories. You will provide expert guidance on complex employee relations matters and help navigate sensitive workplace issues with confidence and professionalism. Your advice will directly influence decision-making, workplace culture, and the delivery of government programs and services. A successful incumbent in this role is client service oriented, communicates effectively both verbally and in writing, has well developed attention to detail, excels at prioritizing competing demands, and demonstrates strong problem-solving skills while working within tight deadlines and making sound, responsible decisions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide expert advice on labour relations matters, including grievances, discipline, performance management, and terminations.
- Interpret and apply legislation, collective agreements, and HR policies to guide decision-making.
- Support the resolution of workplace disputes, including representing the employer in discussions with unions and associations.
- Research labour and employment law trends and develop recommendations to support sound Human Resources practices.
Key Qualifications:
- A relevant bachelor's degree, coupled with 2 years of experience as a human resources generalist or in labour relations.
- Relevant fields of education can include, but are not limited to, Human Resources, Labour Relations, Business Administration with an HR specialization, Sociology and Psychology
Equivalencies:
- A master's degree in a relevant field and 1 year of experience as a human resources generalist or in labour relations.
- A diploma in a relevant field and 4 years of experience as a human resources generalist or in labour relations.
- All other equivalencies are determined on a case by case basis.

Salary Information
The salary range for this position is from $56.99 per hour to $68.06 per hour (approximately $111,131 - $132,717.) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,700.
