Northwest Territories recipients honoured during Literacy Week

YELLOWKNIFE (September 22, 2015) – Recipients of the Council of the Federation Literacy Award and the NWT Ministerial Literacy Awards were honoured today during the annual Adult Learners’ Luncheon in Yellowknife.

These awards were created by the Minister of Education, Culture and Employment in 2002 and the Council of the Federation in 2005 to recognize adult learners that have overcome learning and literacy challenges or championed literacy to learners of all ages.

Community-driven exhibit tells story of Yellowknife’s original inhabitants

YELLOWKNIFE (September 22, 2015) - The Yellowknives Dene First Nation (YKDFN) and the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre (PWNHC) invite you to the official opening of This Land Is Our Home, Wıìlıìdeh Yellowknives Dene.

The exhibit features artifacts, traditional clothing, tools, photographs, and historical information on the Dene who have lived in and around Wıìlıìcheh (Yellowknife Bay) and Wıìlıìdeh (Yellowknife River) for thousands of years. 

New public libraries open in Fort Simpson and Behchokǫ̀

FORT SIMPSON (September 15, 2015) – The Honourable Jackson Lafferty, Minister of Education, Culture and Employment celebrated the opening of the newly built John Tsetso Memorial Library in Fort Simpson today, with Deh Cho First Nations Grand Chief Herb Norwegian, Łı́ı́dlı̨ Kų́ę́ First Nation Chief Gerald Antoine, MLA Kevin Menicoche and Mayor Sean Whelly.

Ice age bison discovery: Our frozen past and thawing future

YELLOWKNIFE (June 10, 2015) – The Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre officially opens Ice Age Bison Discovery: Our Frozen Past and Thawing Future on Thursday, June 18th at 7:00 p.m.  On exhibit for the first time — a 13,650-year-old steppe bison skull found in Tsiigehtchic, NWT in 2007. This exhibit highlights ice age fossils and the changing landscape of the North.

Jackson Lafferty: Improvements to the Student Financial Assistance Program

Mr. Speaker, the Department of Education, Culture and Employment is focused on ensuring opportunities, education and training are available to all residents of the Northwest Territories. As our labour market needs expand, so do the opportunities. The GNWT Population Growth Strategy has a target to bring 2000 people to the territory in the next four years, and ECE is doing its part to contribute to that strategy through one of our most valuable resources – our students.
