GNWT Launches Northern Manufacturing Public Engagement

YELLOWKNIFE (October 12, 2017) - The Government of the Northwest Territories is taking steps to advance a strategy that will help expand the Northwest Territories’ manufacturing sector.

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) today released a discussion paper designed to spark input, ideas, and discussions about manufacturing and how to build the manufacturing sector in the NWT.

Robert C. McLeod: Orange Shirt Day

Mr. Speaker, since 2013, September 30th has been marked as Orange Shirt Day, a day for all Canadians to remember the survivors of the residential school system.

Organizers chose an orange shirt as the symbol for that day based on a story told by Phyllis Jack Webstat, a survivor of the St. Joseph Mission Residential School in Williams Lake, BC. In her story, Ms. Webstat tells of having the shiny, new orange shirt her grandmother had given to her being taken away on her first day at residential school.

Our people and businesses are innovative, self-sufficient and resilient, and want to do their part to contribute to a strong Northwest Territories. We need the kind of well-paying, long term jobs that come with sustainable economic development, and our government is working towards economic self-determination for all NWT residents.

Tourism in NWT Reaches Record Breaking Numbers

YELLOWKNIFE (September 25, 2017) – Tourism numbers reached record heights in the Northwest Territories (NWT) in 2016-17. For the first time, visitor spending surpassed the $200 million mark and over 100,000 visitors travelled to the NWT.

The results bode well for the overall goal of Tourism 2020, the GNWT’s five year strategy for tourism development, which seeks to increase the value of the NWT tourism industry to $207 million annually by 2021.  

Geological Materials Storage Facility Opens Doors to Future Exploration

YELLOWKNIFE (September 25, 2017) – The Government of the Northwest Territories is committed to supporting mineral exploration, and with the grand opening of the new NWT Geological Materials Storage Facility access to geoscience data is now easier than ever before.

The facility houses the largest publically available collection of kimberlites in the world. It will allow analysis of historical core samples to test new mineral exploration ideas at a fraction of the cost of drilling new ones.

Geoscience Information Leads to Largest Staking Rush Since 2014

YELLOWKNIFE (September 22, 2017) – The release of new data on the Slave Geological Province this summer has led to the largest staking rush in the Northwest Territories since 2014.

The staking rush has contributed to an increase in claim numbers this year. So far in 2017, there have been 184 claims in the NWT totaling 139,019 hectares. In comparison, a total of 83 claims were staked in 2016 totaling 42,404 hectares.

Pop Up Gallery and Events Hosted in Celebration of NWT Arts Week

YELLOWKNIFE (September 22, 2017) – Celebrate Northwest Territories (NWT) Arts Week, September 25-29, by popping into the first-ever NWT Arts Pop Up Gallery and other exciting events.

The week-long Pop Up Gallery, hosted in Yellowknife, will feature a curated selection of local artwork, live demonstrations by NWT artists, and a content-collection area for artists to have their work photographed (by appointment only).
