GNWT Introduces Vision for Addressing Energy and Climate Change

YELLOWKNIFE (May 1, 2018) – The Government of the Northwest Territories has released its broad vision related to energy and climate change in the Northwest Territories.

The GNWT recognizes that NWT residents are concerned about the impacts of climate change and is committed to a government-wide approach that takes into account northern energy demands and the cost of living, while reflecting international and national commitments to lower greenhouse gas emissions, exploring options for carbon pricing systems, and capturing local alternatives.

Before I get in too deep, I want to give you a brief introduction to our territory.  The Northwest Territories is among Canada’s largest jurisdictions.

We have 1.3 million square kilometres of land and the total population of a small city. What we lack in population we make up for in resources.

Mr. Speaker, the expansion and growth of the Northwest Territories’ manufacturing sector offers a means to diversify the economy and encourage greater economic development and investment.

For that reason, our government has committed to developing a northern Manufacturing Strategy in collaboration with industry and the NWT’s Manufacturers’ Association. 

GNWT Launches Engagement on Petroleum Legislation Updates

YELLOWKNIFE (March 6, 2018) —The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has launched public and stakeholder engagements on its proposed changes to the Petroleum Resources Act (PRA) and Oil and Gas Operations Act (OGOA).

The engagements — led by the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment — are the first step in a longer-term review process to modernize and improve the overall framework of petroleum legislation in the NWT.
